Women's World Cup 2003 - Match descriptive Info

Match Descriptive

China beat U.S.A. 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11) - duration 2:03
13-Nov, start time: 15:00, end time: 17:03 - Attendance: 4,086

The World Grand Prix champions showed their class in a purely fascinating match between two of Volleyball's great superpowers where China proved too inventive and imposing on the block.

China didn't look back in the first set after racing out to a 4-1 lead before wrapping it up 25-20 on the back of some imposing defence and attack from their star 22-year-old Zhao Ruirui, the tournaments top spiker.

The Americans, however, fought back in the second set from 4-7 down to lead 20-14 and eventually seal it 25-20. By this stage the American block of Prikeba Phipps and Tayyiba Haneef was up and running while Nancy Metcalfe was converting more of her lethal spiking opportunities and libero Stacy Sykora came more into the game.

This combination helped USA claim the third set, where the lead see-sawed numerous times, 26-24 but this narrow score line only inspired China for great things in the fourth set. They raced to a 7-1 lead and although USA closed to within one point at 16-15, it was China's set 25-20.

The tiebreaker continued to enthrall and eventually fell 15-11 to China giving them their ninth win of the tournament and now with only two matches remaining in the tournament they have virtually sealed an Olympic qualifying spot - a top three position - due to their superior set ratio.
