Women's World Cup 2003 - Match descriptive Info

Match Descriptive

Cuba beat Italy 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) - duration 1:16
13-Nov, start time: 12:31, end time: 13:47 - Attendance: 1,854

The Caribbean team, who were sixth on the World Cup standings with three defeats from eight games before the match, improved their record to six wins to keep alive their chances of claiming a qualifying spot for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Italy, who before the match were second with only one defeat, didn't start well with Simona Gioli finding the net on the opening serve of the match and this set the tone with the pre-match favourites making numerous errors during the course of the match.

After an early 8-5 first set lead on the back of some inspirational play from Nadia Centoni, a timeout from Cuban coach Luis Calderon saw his side make a six point run to grab a 13-9 lead, one, which they never relinquished as they stormed home to take the set 25-22.

The second set saw more of Cuba's great fighting qualities with some excellent rallies pleasing the enthusiastic crowd until they sealed the second set 25-22 after a spike from Yaima Ortiz set up match point and Italy's Jenny Barazza spiked wide.
