The Canadian men’s national
Volleyball team has taken many steps forward
since it began international competition in
1959. This past 1997-2000 quadrennial
involved some of the biggest steps ever.
This included the team reaching 10th place
in the world rankings (highest ever achieved)
and its 1st attendance and competitive
showings in almost every major international
tournament from 1998-2000.
A disappointing end to the quadrennial was
evident when Canada failed to qualify for
the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but that is in the
past and the team is now focused on new
goals.
Under the guidance of new head coach Stelio
DeRocco, who is now in his third year with
the team, Team Canada is now ready to
challenge for a spot as one of the top teams
in the world, and is hungrier than ever for
success.
The return of many key players from the
successful 1997-2000 seasons will help
Canada in its quest to prove itself amongst
the elite in the world.
Currently ranked 20th in the world, Canada
is looking for some more big wins in the
2003 World Cup after finishing fifth at the
Pan American Games and second at the NORCECA
Championship.
Coach De Rocco has assembled a number of new
young players that have developed through
the Canadian university system that will
compliment the strong line up of veterans
that he hopes will carry this team to “new
altitudes”.
Team Canada will be counting on key
returning players such as Paul Duerden,
Murray Grapentine, Terry Martin and
Sebastien Ruette. |
