Cuba clinch Pool B and a semifinal spot with 3-1 win over Iran

Cuba showed that they want to be the first team ever to win a medal at the Youth Olympic Games
Singapore, Singapore, August 23, 2010 - Iran and Cuba played on Monday in Toa Payoh Sports Hall with both teams desperately in need of a win to advance to the semi-finals of the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games. Only Cuba will advance to the semi-finals after defeating Iran in four games (21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22). Cuba’s record improved to 2-0, winning pool B, while the loss caused Iran’s record to fall to 0-2.

In the first set, Cuba setter and captain Alexis Lamadrid deftly scored a pair of points by tapping the ball over the net on the second touch rather than setting the ball to a teammate. However, Cuba struggled defensively, allowing multiple aces off serves.
Iran’s Ali Daneshpour tried to show his football skills in the second set, unsuccessfully attempting a “bicycle kick” after the ball got past him. With the set tied at 19, Wilfredo Leon served two consecutive aces and then got a kill to give Cuba a 22-19 lead. Leon scored five of Cuba’s final six points in the set.

With the third set tied at three, Iran’s Ali Daneshpour sustained a leg injury and had to leave the game. With Iran’s players distracted, Cuba scored the next three points and six of the next seven scores. However, Iran bounced back and scored five straight points to tie the score at nine, but Cuba still won the set.

Cuba led most of the way in the fourth and final set. Fittingly, Wilfredo Leon, who was a dominating presence for Cuba, spiked the game-winning point.

Cuba will compete in the boys’ semi-final on Tuesday at 15:30 against Serbia. Iran will play on Wednesday at 10:00 against Congo for fifth place.
