Cuba coach Rodolfo Sanchez did an excellent job motivating his players during his two timeouts in the second set. He called the first one with Argentina leading 11-8, and Cuba scored the next five points. He called the next timeout with Cuba trailing 22-20, and his team earned five of the next six points.

Argentina led for most of a thrilling third set. Coach Sanchez made another wise timeout for Cuba with his team trailing 21-18. After Sanchez talked to his team, they came out all guns blazing and scored seven of the next nine points. Wilfredo Leon had the game-winning kill for Cuba.

It was exhilarating watching Cuba’s Wilfredo Leon and lefty Carlos Araujo jump. Leon (355 cm) and Araujo (353 cm) proved that their listed highest spike-reaches were not myths, soaring well above the net to throw down powerful spikes.

Cuba will play against Iran on Monday at 18:00. Argentina concluded their two preliminary matches, so when they will next compete hinges on the result of Monday’s Cuba-Iran matchup.
