Singapore, Singapore, August 22, 2010 - Two of the tallest teams in the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games squared off on Sunday in Toa Payoh Sports Hall, with Russia besting Serbia in 3 sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-12). Serbia’s record fell to 1-1 after they defeated Congo on Saturday, while it was the first match for Russia.
Serbia scored the first point of the match. However, after that, Serbia never led again. Serbia’s Milan Katic showed his determination by diving over the wall surrounding the court to hit the ball, helping the Serbians earn their second point of the first set.
Russia opened the third game with four straight points, had another run of five consecutive scores later in the set, and scored the match’s last six points, winning the set by the largest margin of the match.
“I think we started from the beginning with bad serves, and as a result on the other side of the net Russia started attacking very hard,” Serbia Captain Sinisa Zarkovic said.
After leading Serbia with 17 points on Saturday, Filip Stoilovic only managed to score six points Sunday. Bogdan Glivenko led Russia with 14 points
“We worked a lot on our mindset because in this kind of competition, you have to be strong not only physically but mentally,” Russia coach Andrei Kukushkin said. “The players concentrated and they played a good match, and I hope their mindset will be as strong for the next matches as well.”
Russia will play against Congo on Monday at 10:00. Serbia concluded their two preliminary matches, so when they will next compete hinges on the result of Monday’s Russia-Congo matchup.
