Singapore, Singapore, August 21, 2010 - The quicker Argentinean team was able to defeat the taller Iranian squad 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 29-27) in a thrilling boys' match on Saturday in Toa Payoh Sports Hall as the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games continued.

In the first set, Argentina scored seven straight points to push their lead from 9-6 to 16-6. Leonardo Plaza (1.86m) earned Argentina’s 12th point by blocking the much taller Shahab Ahmadi (2.08m) from Iran.
Argentina had runs of six and eight straight points in the second game, which they won by 16 points.
“In fifteen years of coaching, this was the first time that something like this has happened,” Iranian coach Naser Shahnazi said. “I did not expect us to play so poorly at all. Tonight, we only saw thirty percent of the potential of this team, and we will try harder against Cuba.”
Iran put up their toughest fight in an exciting third set, led by captain Ramin Khani, who had several powerful spikes. The game was tied at 24 before Mauro Llanos saw out the mathc with a game-winning kill for Argentina.
“In the third set, the Iranian players played with a lot of confidence,” said Argentina’s Leonardo Plaza. “We started to relax, and assume that the game was over, but we eventually focused and fought hard.”
Argentina next plays on Sunday against Cuba at 3:30pm local time, while Iran will compete on Monday against Cuba at 6:00pm local time.
