Egypt beat hosts Singapore to fifth

Egypt, winner of the African Youth Olympic Qualification, ended fifth at the Games
Singapore, Singapore, August 25, 2010. Fifth place in the girls’ tournament at this year's Youth Olympic Games went to Egypt after a vibrant 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19) win over hosts Singapore.

Injuries again hampered the Africans as one of their stars Nirmeen Seifelnasr, had back problems. However the Egyptian team had a good reception.

The crowd in the Toa Payoh Sports Hall was obviously for Singapore, but the north African girls had no fear and fought with all their strength until the last whistle.

In the first set Singapore, supported by the crowd, played intensively and succeeded in winning their first set at the first edition of the Games.

However the story in the second set was different: Egypt took over the match from the beginning, and after a lack of concentration from 10-18 to 15-18, completed the set without problems, thanks to their best player, the spiker Yasmine Hussein who scored 24 points.

The third set started again with the leadership of Egypt who seemed to re-find their power and belief. Singapore scored a number of points through captain Joelle Shu Yu Lim, a spiker, and with Cassandra Hwee Min Tay, a fast-moving central, but they it was not enough to stop Egypt who eventually took the third and fourth set to clinch fifth place.
