USA clinch Pool B and semifinal spot with 3-0 win over Egypt

Egypt celebrate during their superb third set against USA, but in the end it was the Americans who prevailed on Monday

Singapore, Singapore, August 23, 2010 – USA booked themselves a spot in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games semifinals after following up on their extraordinary victory against Belgium on Sunday with an entertaining 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-23) win over Egypt in the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Monday.

The win also confirmed Belgium’s spot in the final four.

The first set started well for USA, who were up 10-3 very quickly. Egypt’s best player Yasmin Hussein had recovered after a slight injury from Saturday’s loss to Belgium but even with her powers, Egypt couldn’t do much against the giant girls from USA. Elizabeth McMahon and Katherine Mitchell didn’t give many chances to their opponents. The best action of the set was at 23-16, with an incredible rally with spikes and strong defence, finally won by USA, thanks to a spike of Taylor Simpson.

In the second set it was all about the defense of Egypt who never gave up and fought hard for every point, with captain Salma Elmohands contributing some great spikes. On the other side of the net Simpson was again the best scorer and in the end, it was the strength of USA which defeated their opponents.

At the beginning of the third set the teams couldn’t be separated with USA up 11-10. At this moment, Egypt found a new gear, and with Hussein leading the charge, took the lead at 16-13. Egypt edged their way closer to their first set-win of the tournament but at it 23-22, USA finished in style thanks to the tallest girl of the tournament, McMahon, and captain Samantha Crash who spiked the last points, together with left handed setter Micha Hancock.

With all the matches in the girls’ preliminaries played, USA will play Japan in the second semifinal on Tuesday, preceded by the first semifinal between Belgium and Peru. Egypt will wait until Wednesday for their playoff against Singapore.
