Germany defeated Russia
 

The euforic Germans after their victory over Russia

MEXICALI, Mexico, August 22, 2007.- Germany defeated Russia and finished first in Pool H for the 9-16 positions with an unbeaten 3-0 record.

Both teams had secured berths in the round for the 9-12 positions. The Russians qualified in second place with a 2-1 mark

The Germans recovered from losing the first set and won the next three with one spectacular display of skills by Captain Denis Kaliberda. The scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-15.

Kaliberda was positive in 21 of 32 spiking attempts and received a valuable help from Jonas Umlauft, Lukas Bauer and Christian Fromm who added 13, 12 and 11 points respectively.

Russian Captain Ruslan Moskvin topped all the scorers in the match with 22 points and Alexey Yashchishin had 12.

The Russians dominated the first set with superb blocking led by Dmitry Shcherbinin and Artem Volvich.

In the next two sets the result reverted with Germany recovering from the adversities of the first one. The perfect location of the serves was the key ingredient for the Germanís victory in the fourth side by a landslide.
