Poland miss out on Final Round spot

Cuba's libero Keibir Gutierrez Torres celebrates Sunday's victory as his side moved within one win of the 2010 FIVB World League Final Round
Lodz, Poland, July 4, 2010 – Cuba picked up their second win of the weekend as they beat Poland 3-1 (25-19, 25-22. 22-25, 25-16) on Sunday, in front of nearly 13,000 Polish fans in Lodz in their Pool D 2010 FIVB World League clash, denying the home side of a place in the Final Round in the process.

Cuban opposite Rolando Cepeda Abreu was the top scorer of the match with 16 points. Piotr Gruszka led the home side with 14 points. The MVP trophy went to Cuba's setter Raydel Hierrezuelo Aguirre.

Poland began with a flying start and quickly held a four point advantage. However  the Cubans did not need much time to calm down and gain control. Thanks to powerful serves and great counter attacks, as well as a near faultless performance with no mistakes, the visitors took the first set.

Cuba led right from the start in the second playing without any pressure. The hosts tried to stay in touch and managed to reduce the gap towards the end of the set. Simple errors from the Cubans gave Poland hope, however the visitors used the power of their attack to take a 2-0 lead.

The Cubans relaxed at the beginning of the third set and were punished for it as the Poles took the lead. Despite increasing the gap Orlando Blackwood's men did not lose their fighting spirit. They leveled the score at 21-21, but then some inspired plays from Polish wing spiker Zbigniew Bartman gave the home side a much anticipated set win.

However the Poles weren't able to carry the momentum through to the fourth set as Cuba led from the first point. Poland tried to stay in touch but the result was never in doubt as the visitors took the fourth set 25-16 and the match.

In the final week of this year's FIVB World League, Poland will host Germany in Katowice while Cuba face Argentina away in Formosa.
