USA win thrilling match in Cairo

The USA celebrate a hard-fought win over Egypt on Saturday night in Cairo
Cairo, Egypt, July 3, 2010 - The USA picked up their fourth win over Egypt in the 2010 FIVB World League with a tight 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 18-16) victory on Saturday night in Cairo.

This victory improved the win–loss record for the American 7-3 as Egypt fell to a 1-9  record.

Egyptian opposite Ahmed Salah topped the Egyptian scorers with 25 points as Rooney Sean led the U.S. with 20 points/

The Egyptian team started strongly with powerful attacks from opposite Ahmed Salah  who helped his team to an early lead before taking the set.

Improved blocking and attacking helped the Americans gain momentum in the second set and they held on to the lead as they claimed the set to bring the scores level.

Despite the powerful American attack, the hosts put up a good fight with a number of good spikes in the third set to keep the two teams level. However Egypt pounced on a number of American errors in defense to regain the lead.

The fourth set saw the Olympic champions take
an early lead to thanks to powerful serving and blocking alongside a number of attacking mistakes from the hosts. The USA kept up the rhythm to take the game to a tie-break situation.

The fifth set was an exciting affair with many heart-stopping moments. However it was heartbreak for the home side as the Americans took the set 18-16, and with that, the match.


Egypt will now host Finland in the last weekend of the Intercontinental Round next weekend while the United States will host Russia in a crucial match.
