Germany finishes fifth weekend of FIVB World League victorious

German captain Björn Andrae and his teammates celebrate the victory over Argentina, helping keep their Final Round hopes alive in the 2010 FIVB World League

Berlin, Germany, July 1, 2010 - Germany finished their fifth weekend of the 2010 FIVB World League on top of Pool D as they overcame Argentina 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19) to keep their Final Round hopes alive.

With Cuba due to face Poland at home over the next two days it is unlikely that the World League newcomers will finish the weekend at the top of the table, but the result keeps alive any hopes the European side has of reaching the next round.

Germany's Georg Grozer topped the scores with 21 points as Federico Pereyra scored 19 for the visitors.

Robert Kromm and Grozer, Germany's top scorers so far in this year's tournament, helped give the home side an early lead as their strong attack, block and serves helped their side win the first set.

Argentina put a lot more pressure on the German reception by serving much better in the second set. Nicolás Uriarte directly started with two aces as Pereyra served another ace to bring about victory in the second set to bring the scores level.

The third set started equal with both sides trading points. The Germans then pulled ahead thanks to the fantastic defence of libero Sebastian Prüsener and the two middle blockers Marcus Böhme and Max Günthör.

Germany took over the lead in the fourth set right from the beginning thanks to solid blocking and defence. Jochen Schöps saw out the match with an  impressive back row attack.

Germany will now face off against Poland as Argentina play Cuba in the final weekend of the Intercontinental Round.
