Mexican Alejandra Perales jumps to get the ball back for a spike.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 12, 2009 – Mexico left the Chalerm Phrakiart Gym with their heads high after pulling off a magnificent come-from-behind victory 24-26 21-25 25-16 25-20 15-13 over the well-established Germany to end up the top-notch championship with the well-earned ninth place.
Germany, propelled by hard-attacking Ann-Christin Quade, led 3-0 in the first set before Mexico counter-attacked well, with Andrea Rangel exploding her smashes to help her team close the margin at 13-13. From then on, both teams carried out a dazzling volleyball. As Germany rolled on their great form in offence, the Mexicans excelled in defence. Mexico moved ahead 24-23 and needed only one more point to wrap up the hard-fought set. However, the Germans just did not want to give up easily. They stormed back mightily to level 24-24 and marched on their sparkling form to take the tough set 26-24.
Mexico tried to make amends for the loss in the first set. They mixed the devastating spikes by Rangel with the scintillating blocks from Xitlali Herrera and Cecilia Rios to capture the pole position 7-5. Germany gradually pulled their game together. Quade became a nightmare for the Mexican blockers when she jumped from all angles to spike mightily. Germany captured the set as expected 25-21.
Mexico came to life in the third set when they started to produce the goods. Talented Rangel stretched her hands to smash her way, helping her team win the set without much effort 25-16.
The fourth set was a thrilling battle when both sides poured everything they had to make the most of the game. Mexico, however, came out with the better form to clinch the set 25-20.
Both sides still performed up to their standards in the deciding set. Mexico fared better to win the close tie-breaker 15-13 and the exhausting encounter.
