Havana, Cuba, June 11, 2010 - Cuba claimed a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-19) victory over Germany at home in Havana on Friday night to claim their third consecutive victory in the 2010 FIVB World League as the side opened their second weekend of their campaign.
Cuba began erratically in the first set but rallied to move ahead. Germany suffered after they lost concentration and made a number of mistakes and despite the home side also suffering problems with its serve they took the lead.
The second set saw Cuba come out strong and maintain control throughout thanks to a number of excellent spikes from the corners. Germany's problems continued as Cuba took a 2-0 lead exciting home fans.
Germany recovered in the third set bringing the game even on many occasions. However a three-point rally gave the Cubans the advantage over their rivals and they eventually saw out the set and the third win of their 2010 World League campaign.
Cuban Yoandry Leal scored 17 points while the German Georg Grozer scored 14.
"In general we are meeting our goal of getting better every game, and we did it primarily on one aspect that we had gone very wrong: blocking," said Cuba coach Orlando Samuels after the match. "We must continue to improve in reception and in other aspects. I think that's the basis of our victory”.
The two Pool D sides will clash again on Saturday at 8.40pm local time.
