Russia earn third straight World League victory at home

Egypt lost to Russia in Kaliningrad despite 19 points from Abdelhay Ahmed
Kaliningrad, Russia, June 11, 2010 – Russia recorded their third win of the 2010 FIVB World League with a 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15) victory over Egypt on Friday in front of 4,650 fans at the Amber Arena in Kaliningrad.

Egyptian Abdelhay Ahmed topped the scorers with 19 points while Semen Poltavskiy and Taras Khtey led Russia with 12 points each.

The third straight win means Russia lead Pool C with nine points as Egypt sits in third with two points following their opening victory over Finland who play USA at home in Tampere on Friday as well.

The first set saw both sides making a number of mistakes and neither of them taking full control of the game until the very end when the Russians narrowly overcame the visitors 26-24.

The second set took a similar path as the previous one with both sides struggling for control. However the Egyptians managed to take a slight lead thanks to several solid and risky serves to clinch it at 25-22.

The third set saw the hosts find their rhythm and see off the Egyptian offense to pick up the set 25-21.

Russia finally saw off the visitors in the fourth as they proved too strong who lost momentum to lose the set 25-15.

"We were probably too self-confident before the match," Russian captain Alexey Kazakov said. "Egypt punished us for it as they proved they know how to play high-quality Volleyball. Fortunately by the middle of the game we found our rhythm and everything went on smoothly from then."

The two sides are set to clash again on Saturday at 17:00 GMT in Kaliningrad.
