Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 4, 2009 – After a convincing straight-set win over Slovakia in their first match on the previous day, formidable Brazil stormed on their brilliance in the second tussle against Dominican Republic, which they won a one-sided battle 25-16 25-18 25-7.
Led by Sthefanie Tiele Martins Paulino, who scored a match-high 13 points from 37 attempts, Brazil came out full force to dominate the first set. The Brazil’s powerful spikes, scintillating blocking and insurmountable defence gave the less-trained rivals tough times to score. Brazil netted the comfortable first set 25-16.
After conceding one set, the Dominicans put their acts together and hit back gallantly with a dazzling volleyball. Still, they found the Brazilians too strong. Carolina Azedo de Freitas uncorked a series of sharp spikes to help the team win the second set 25-18.
Brazil, questing for the third world title, jumped to the commanding 10-2 lead in the third set before Stmera Ferreira de Almeida’s terrific jump serves and the exceptional blocking by Francyne Aparecida Jacintho and Isabela da Silveira stretched the lead to 21-6. Brazil allowed Dominican Republic only one more point to wrap up the set 25-7 and the comfortable match.
