Defending champs defeat Bulgaria in Pool A's opening FIVB World League 2010 match

Uberlandia, Brazil, June 4, 2010 – Reigning FIVB world champions Brazil began their defense of the FIVB World League with a tense 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23) win over Bulgaria in front of 5,000 fans in Uberlandia, Brazil on Friday.
Bulgarian wing-spiker and 2009 FIVB Club World Championship MVP Matey Kaziyski topped the scores with 20 points while wing-spiker Murilo Endres scored 19 points for the home side.

Brazil had trouble receiving in the first set, and with star wing-spiker Giba missing from the starting six, the team was stunned by the visitors as they lost the first set.

Brazil finally gained momentum in the second set and despite a number of powerful serves from Kaziyski they pulled back to even the match.

The third set saw both teams making several mistakes and neither taking full advantage. The set concluded in nail-biting fashion as Brazil narrowly overcame the visitors 26-24.

The hosts rediscovered their rhythm in the final set and took advantage of a number of errors from Bulgaria as they clinched the match and their first three points of the competition.

The two sides will meet again on Saturday at 12.30pm GMT while Pool A’s other match features Korea facing the Netherlands at home in Seoul on Saturday and Sunday.
