Team profile

The German Youth Girls National Team had one goal in the final round of the 2009 European Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands: to qualify for the World Championships in Thailand.

With victories over Greece and the Ukraine, Germany fulfilled the expectations of head coach Stefan Bräuer.

Bräuer is hopeful his team can advance out of Pool A at the tournament in Thailand, although he is not taking any team for granted.

"Serbia was the runner-up at the European Championship and has a strong team. We lost to them at the European Championships 1-3," Bräuer said. "Thailand will be a good contender and will receive a big boost from the crowd. I don't know much about Egypt but we have to win against them. If we want to qualify for the quarterfinals we have to beat one of the two other teams also."

It is only the second time for a female German youth team to take part in a World Championships because of a former political decision by the German Volleyball Federation.

The German team qualified directly for the European Championships in Rotterdam this year as the team somewhat surprisingly was crowned European Champion in 2007.

Results of the German youth team (female) at World Championships:

2007 - 11th place
