Team profile

Volleyball was introduced in the Dominican Republic in 1916. Our National Team first participated in an international event in 1934, at the Caribbean Volleyball Tournament.

In 1994, the Dominican Republic National Volleyball Federation created the Dominican Republic National Female Volleyball Program under the guidance of Mr. Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, FIVB Executive Vice President and also Executive Vice-President of the Dominican National Federation. This successful program has established the necessary conditions for the development of the Dominican Girls Youth National Volleyball Team. In this same year, our Girls Youth National Team participated for the first time in the Continental Championship held in the city of Arrecibo, Puerto Rico, finishing in third place. In 1996, our National Team finished second in the NORCECA Continental Championship held in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. After an important victory over Puerto Rico in the Continental Qualification Tournament for the Girls Youth Championship 1997, our National Team participated for the first time in a Girls Youth World Championship, in Thailand.

At the 2000 Continental Girls Youth Championship, held in the city of La Romana, Dominican Republic, our National Team finished won silver, after losing the final match against Puerto Rico. The second-place finish qualified them automatically for second time in the history of our Girls Youth National Volleyball Team for the Girls Youth World Championship.

In 2001, the Girls Youth National Volleyball Team finished eighth after a strong final match against the Chinese Taipei Girls Youth Volleyball Team. It was the first time the Dominican Team reached the Final Round of a World Championship after just two participations: 1997 in Thailand and 2001 in Croatia. The Dominican Girls finished their participation with a total of three wins and four losses, beating Japan 3-2, Belarus 3-2 and Croatia 3-1.

In 2006, our youth team participated in the NORCECA Girls Youth Championship held in Gainesville, Florida. The team won four games and lost twice, beating Puerto Rico 3-2, Honduras 3-0, Canada 3-1 and Mexico 3-2. The Dominicans finished in second place, battling till the end against Team USA to earn a berth at the 2007 Girls Youth World Championship.

The Dominican Republic Girls Youth National Volleyball Team participated at the 2007 Girls Youth World Championship held in the cities of Tijuana & Mexicali, Mexico, finishing in eighth place after a difficult final match against Turkey.

In 2008, our Girls Youth National Volleyball Team won bronze at the NORCECA Girls Youth Continental Championship in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, after an exciting final match against the hosts.

Second place enabled the team to enter the 2009 Girls Youth World Championship.

Head coach Enrique Cesar Larrazaleta of Cuba and his veteran assistant Juan Alberto Capellan have high hopes for the tournament in Thailand and are looking forward to an exciting competition.

Coach profile

Cuban Enrique Larrazaleta began working with the new Dominican Girls Youth Team this season, and it has been a very busy year already for the squad in terms of preparation.

Larrazaleta says he is enthusiastic about the challenges ahead, after a successful few years at the helm of the team.

From 2006-2008, Larrazaleta led the Girls Youth Team to a silver medal at the NORCECA Girls Youth Continental Championship, qualifying them for the 2007 FIVB Girls Youth World Championship, where they finished eighth. The team won bronze at the 2008 NORCECA Girls Youth Continental Championship.

In 2006 and 2008 he led the Dominicans to their best showings ever at the NORCECA Continental Championship. The team posted victories against USA in 2006 and Puerto Rico in 2008. That team went on to become the new Dominican Junior Women’s Team.

"Our goal at the 2009 FIVB Girls Youth World Championship will be to finish among the top six teams,” says Larrazaleta.

Larrazaleta, 61, is a graduate of the Jose Marti Pedagogic Institute, with a Masters Degree in Physical Education.
