Tatsiana makes her Mark-evich

Macau, China, July 27, 2005 - The FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship said farewell on Wednesday to Belarus, and also to one of the tournament's best players. Tatsiana Markevich has been a joy to watch, poetry in motion as she rises gracefully and effortlessly before dispatching elegant winners into space no one else could see.

She has been the key figure in Belarus's play, along with captain Anastasiya Miklashevich, as the Europeans beat Russia and Puerto Rico in group play before falling to Argentina in the elimination play-offs on Wednesday.

Head coach Viktar Hancharou says the 17-year-old Markevich is a wonderful talent, but can still improve on the mental side of the game.

"She has been playing Volleyball for a long time and has a lot of talent. She is a rising player," says the coach. "She's been in our women's teams for four years in Belarus, and sometimes she plays so well no one can believe what they are seeing.

"She is not very tall, only 1.84 metres, but she is very clever and plays a very clever game."

Hancharou was forced to take her off at one point in the second set, as the Argentine blockers did their job on Belarus's most dangerous player.

"Sometimes she needs to rest for four or five minutes because she is not strong psychologically, and when she comes back she's just as good," said Hancharou.

"Her biggest quality is that she loves to play Volleyball, so she feels good in the game.

"As for her technique, she has a nice sense of the ball and she reads the game so well and knows where the next action will be."

Belarus won many admirers here with their play, and Tatsiana Markevich will be a name to remember.
