China to face Chinese Taipei in elimination play-offs

Macau, China, July 25, 2005 - China's defence of the FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship will continue on Wednesday against a friend and a foe they know well: Chinese Taipei.

The two Asian rivals were drawn to meet each other in the elimination play-off at Monday night's draw at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. The winner of the game will advance to the quarter-finals, while the loser will be eliminated.

The other three elimination play-off games will be: Argentina against Belarus, Ukraine against Italy, and Russia against Egypt.

In the play-offs to determine the four seeded positions for the quarter-finals, USA will play Croatia and Brazil will meet Korea. These four teams won their respective groups on Monday and have already secured a place in the quarter-finals.

Looking ahead to the elimination play-off against two-time defending champions China, Chinese Taipei's head coach, Yu Chao Cheng, said: "It's a normal game for us, and if we play how we can then we have a chance.

"We played against China in the Asian Youth Championship in the Philippines in May and China won 3-0.

"Some of their players have changed, but I think they are playing at more or less the same level."

Tuesday is a rest day, and the six play-off matches will take place Wednesday, all at Tap Seac.

The full draw is: Play-off seeding group: USA vs Croatia, Brazil vs Korea.
Play-off elimination group: Argentina vs Belarus, Ukraine vs Italy, Russia vs Egypt, Chinese Taipei vs China.

The eight teams who finished second and third in the four groups will take part in the elimination play-offs. The winners of these four matches will advance to the quarter-finals, and the losers will be eliminated.
The four teams who finished bottom of the groups have been eliminated.
