Italy Goes Into Semis
In the first set the Italians started off promisingly taking an early advantage, 3:1. But the Croatian team responded quickly and took the leadership over. The consequence in tactics led the European champions towards success: at the end of the opening part Italy was six points behind. But the Italian team did not renounce its chance for the final triumph: the second set, very balanced, ended up with the win of Squadra Azzura. The Croatians served for the set twice but Italy stood firm to finally win a see-saw game, 28:26. Croatia recuperated the lead after the third part, vastly evenhanded as well. Italy stayed close until 23:23 only to lose two following points. Almost an opposite situation appeared at the end of the fourth set: Croatia kept its chances alive for a long time but conceded five last points, one after the other, and was defeated 25:19. In the second tie-break of the day the emotions went on their peak once again as both teams were often winning or losing the points in series. At the end Italy gained a slight advantage and did not let it go. The European vice-champions will face USA in a semi-final, on Saturday.
