Bahia Blanca, Argentina, August 27, 2011 – Many people in a variety of capacities, work every day to guarantee the smooth running of the FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship in Argentina.
They are likely the smallest pieces of the puzzle but as important as the cornerstones to produce a good image of the event.
One of them is Miguel Mendez, the 54 years-old man in charge of court maintenance at Osvaldo Casanova Gymnasium, where the finals of the competition are taking place.
A native of Cordoba province, Mendez has lived in Buenos Aires since seven years ago when he started to work for FeVa, the Argentinean Volleyball Federation) and has plenty experience in the organization of international events.
Méndez has been part of the organization staff of the 2002 FIVB Men’s World Championship, the 2010 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Formosa and in the 2010 World League Finals in Córdoba, among many others.
“I work with two partners,” Méndez explains. “We arrive very early to the gym, about two hours before the start of the match to open the facility, bring the equipment and keep the court in the right conditions. After the matches conclude we make sure that every thing is clean and in place.”
The Osvaldo Casanova Gymnasium was remodeled on the occasion of the FIVB Boy’s Youth Championship and Mendez was part of the process.
“I came in to an inspection visit of the gymnasium and suggested some modifications that fortunately were made on time and I can say that right now is first level.”
