Tense battle for two spots in Bahia Blanca on Friday

Four teams will battle on Friday in Bahia Blanca for the remaining two spots in the semifinals

Bahia Blanca, Argentina, August 26, 2011 – With defending champions Serbia and Spain having booked places for the final-four round of the FIVB Volleyball Boys Youth World Championship, Argentina, Bulgaria, France and Cuba still have chances and are all strong contenders for the remaining two places in Saturday’s semifinal matches in Bahia Blanca.

The other four teams of Pool E and F will play for places 5-8 while Brazil, Egypt and last season runners-up Iran already booked their places on the semifinals that take place in Almirante Brown for places 9-12.

Bahia Blanca – Pools E & F

Pool E

Serbia v China – 18:00

Serbia, title holder of the 2009 edition in Italy looks to repeat the gold medal and leads the Pool with two victories (3-2 v Argentina, host team and 3-1 v Cuba) and 5 points having secured at least the second place in Pool E to advance to the next round while China after losing both matches 3–2 and 3–1 stands with only one point and will go to the Pool 5–8 places. One victory of Serbia will mean the top of Pool E for the semifinals to take place also in Bahia Blanca. Serbian Uros Kovacevic and Milan Katic subdued Cuba on Thursday

Argentina v Cuba – 21:00 Live broadcast by ESPN.

Argentina lost the first match of this round 3–2 but bounced back winning over China 3–1 and now stands on second place of Pool F with 4 points. Cuba has 2 points after defeating China in a tie-break in the first match of the second round and losing to title holder Serbia on Thursday. A match that apart from the outcome promises excitement and emotion as the local fans have always shown on friendly tours that Cuba is a loved team for them, with no doubt, also cheering the host light blue – white jersey team. Quiroga has been on fire and the Argentinean is the new leading scorer while Cuban Fundora is coming of a superb night.

Pool F

France v Bulgaria – 10:00

In a very equal Pool – lead by Spain by 5 points (and playing the third and last match vs. Greece – winless in this round) France and Bulgaria should be playing a crucial match fighting for the second place of the pool that will go on for the medals.  France best finish was the bronze medal in the year 2007, while Bulgaria won the same in 1989.

Greece v Spain – 13:00

Spain leads the pool with two victories and five points and is secured at least of a second place while Greece with a great output on the first round have lost the two matches played already in second round and therefore will play for places 5-8. Greece best finish was the silver medal in 1997 while Spain goes on dreaming on its first Podium place.

Almirante Brown – Pool G & H

Pool G

Puerto Rico – Tunisia – 10:00

Both teams lost their two matches on this second round and will play with 0 points each for the third and fourth places of the Pool and are relegated to the competition for places 13-16. None of these teams ever won a Podium places with Puerto Rico best finish in 1995 with the 4th place while Tunisia finished 6th in 2009.

Egypt v Brazil – 13:00

In a very exciting match – with both teams already with 6 points and qualified for places 9-12 with the winner finishing on top of Pool G for the next and last phase of the Boys’ Youth World Championship that ends next Sunday, August 28th.

Pool H

Korea v USA – 18:00

Korea still looks forward to their first victory in this World Championship while USA defeated Russia on the second match of this pool this Thursday evening.  Korea won twice the Bronze Medal in the years 1991 and 1993 but USA never stepped onto the Podium.

Russia v Iran – 21:00

Iran leads Pool H with 6 points while Russia stands second with 3 points after losing Thursday match by a tie-breaker v USA. Brazil, Egypt and Iran have already booked semi-final places for places 9-12.
