TEAM COMPOSITION

In 2005, the U.S. Boys Youth National Team qualified to compete at the Youth World Championships for the first time, but could not travel to the event in Algeria.

In 2007, the United States competed in the FIVB Boys Youth World Championship for the first time in Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico. It finished 15^th.

The team qualified for the 2009 FIVB World Championship by winning the 2008 NORCECA Boys’ Youth Championship in Miami, Fla. The team was undefeated and did not lose a set.

The United States placed 10^th at the 2009 FIVB World Championship in Italy, recording a pool play upset over Iran, and was named USA Volleyball’s Men’s Team of the Year for 2009.

The U.S. qualified for the 2011 FIVB World Championship by virtue of a second-place finish at the 2010 NORCECA Continental Championship. The team did not lose a set in the tournament until the final, when it lost to Cuba, led by Wilfredo Leon. Aaron Russell was named the tournament’s Best Blocker.

Ken Shibuya has been an assistant coach for Stanford University men’s volleyball since 2006.

Shibuya has handled much of the scouting, game-planning and recruiting for the Cardinal, providing vital insight during Stanford's national championship season.

Shibuya's 22-year collegiate coaching journey began during his undergraduate days. He was instrumental in starting Virginia's first men's club team, before assisting the Cavaliers' women's varsity from 1990-94.

Shibuya established himself as a head coach in the small-college ranks, first with the women's team at Sweet Briar (Va.) College from 1994-95, where he set a school mark for consecutive victories.

He has coached the women’s team at Christopher Newport and the men’s team at Juniata.

Shibuya has been part of the coaching staff of the USA Boys Youth team since 2003 and has headed U.S. development camps. In 2002, he served on John Kosty's staff at the boys’ High Performance camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
