Italy advances with perfect record

The Italian fans supported their players against Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico held the advantage 8-7 at the first stop but it was Italy in the front at the second one by score of 16-12. Luca Vettori, the leading scorer of the competition entering Sunday, started with a hot hand and recorded 7 points with Fedrizzi and Preti contributing 4 and 3 respectively. Ricardo Archilla was the main Puerto Rican player as Italy won 25-19.

Italy took the lead 6-3 in the second set forcing a Puerto Rican time-out. Jorge Lopez landed two spikes before Italian Lanza connected for the 8-6 lead. Puerto Rico capitalized on the Italian errors to take the 10-9 lead but Italy kept close. Lopez again connected for a two-point advantage of Puerto Rico 15-13 and Lanza answered back. Puerto Rico reached the second stop leading 16-14 with a spike by Burgos. Teams maintained their level as Puerto Rico went on to win 25-21 with a spike by Lopez from the right side.

The home boys led 8-5 and 16-12. In the third set, the Italians displayed great floor defensive abilities and also at the net with Sperandio. Vettori collected four more points for Italy while Lopez and Archilla kept Puerto Rico within striking distance. At the end Italy ended as the winner by score of 25-19, with Preti and Vettori providing the last two points.

Teams stayed close in the early stages of the fourth set with Italy in front 8-7. Vettori gave his side a two-point lead at 13-11, but Puerto Rico tied at 13 with error and spike of Burgos. Attack by Vettori and Lanza around a block by Pinelli sent Italy to a 16-13 lead. Fedrizzi produced one ace right after the time-out and Burgos answered the bell for Puerto Rico.  Italy won 25-20.
