Spain secures spot in second phase

Spaniards celebrate their victory carrying a giant national flag to court centre


Spain led 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical time-outs of the first set relying on the three blocks and two aces. The Spaniards won the opening frame with an ace from Francisco Ruiz following a spike of Bugallo. Jorge Almansa and Borja Ruiz led the route with 6 and 5 points respectively while France had Ragondet and Rabiller as its main producers both with three points. The score was a lopsided 25-16.

In the second set, France took the lead 8-6. Ngapeth sparked a French rally leading to a 12-8 advantage. Attack by Bugallo and block by Almansa surrounded by a variety of French errors gave Spain the lead 16-15 at the second pause. France tied with a tip by Ngapeth but Spain regained the margin with a hammering shot by Almansa. At 19-18 Spain scored twice for a three-point lead en route to a 25-20 win.

The Spaniards jumped to an 8-3 advantage in the third set helped by the persistent unforced errors of the opponent. Spain maintained the 5-point margin en route to the second stop aided by a couple of spikes by Bugallo for a 16-11 gap. Riding on the inspiration of little but productive Francisco Ruiz Spain took the set and the victory 25-18.
