Team profile |
|
The 2009 Italian World Championship is the first World Championship for several of the players on the Argentine team, making it the start of a new chapter in their careers. But it is also the closing of a chapter for the players who won gold at the 2008 South american Youth Boys Championship.
In 2008, the team was coached by Juan Cichello, and together they wrote themselves into Argentine volleyball history with that win, which required beating Brazil in Brazil. As a result of that victory, this team in light blue and white will arrive in Italy in high spirits, fresh off the glory of having pulled off an incredible feat in Brazil last year.
The team's goal of defending its fourth-place finish in Algeria in 2005 and Mexico in 2007 will not be an easy one, but there is a lot of talent and a great work ethic within the team. Sebastián Sole, the captain at the South American Championship team, is a prime example. This will be his third World Championship after Mexico and the Junior World Championship in India.
But he is not the only experienced player. Facundo Hen, Gonzalo Quiroga, Juan Finoli and Federico Franetovich are names that already appear on rosters in the A1 and A2 leagues, the most important Argentine tournaments for men.
With these weapons and a new coach in Fabián Muraco, who has a wealth of experience nurturing young talent, Argentina will step once more onto the court attempting to make history. |
Coach profile |
|
 |
Fabián Muraco has been behind many of the great results obtained by both the Men's and Boys' volleyball teams in Argentina over the last few years.
Muraco succeeded Juan Cichello (now dedicated solely to the Argentine Men's Junior Team), bringing great happiness to Argentine volleyball.
The most important result obtained by Muraco was fourth place at the 2005 World Boys Championship in Algeria. That team consisted of talented youngsters Luciano De Cecco, Rodrigo Quiroga and Federico Pereyra, who are all now part of the Argentine National Men's Team coached by Javier Weber.
Before Muraco and his coaching side left the National Team, they ensured that the National Junior Boys Team joined the A2 League to improve their skills, following similar successful models in Europe. The team joined A2 in the 2005-2006 season and has given the players experience playing on long tournaments.
Muraco returned to the National Team program in 2008-2009 as head of the A2 youth team and dedicated himself to improving this young team (with players all born in 1991 or 1992), whom he will continue to coach when they become Junior players.
The Italian 2009 World Championship marks Muraco's official return to the international scene.
