Algiers, Algeria, August 23, 2005 - Sixteen teams will start Wednesday the competition to win the trophy of the ninth Boys U-19 World Championship due to start in Algiers and Oran cities of Algeria but with Brazil, Russia, Iran and Italy as the big favorites.

The competition will show all the big forces in this age category including all the previous winners of the trophy since the start of the competition in 1989 starting from the defending champions Brazil the winner of this competition six times out of eight, Russia the winner in 1999 and Italy the champions in 1997. The competition will show also many big forces like Poland, the European champions, Iran - the silver medalists in 2001 and bronze medalists in 2003 - and Korea who won bronze in 1991 and 1993.

This championship also includes plenty of stars as many senior teams, like Brazil, Russia and Iran, and Egypt depend on the under age group level for their future heroes

The sixteen teams participating in the competition are divided into four pools each of four teams; pool A includes Algeria, Korea, Egypt and Slovakia, pool B Brazil, Argentina, Bulgaria and Mexico, pool C Italy, Poland, Canada and India and pool D Russia, France, Tunisia and Iran. The teams of each pool will play a round robin system to determine the ranking where the teams ranked fourth will depart after the preliminary round while the top teams qualify to the quarterfinal and play the seeding group matches, while teams ranked second and third will play in the elimination play off to determine the qualifiers to the quarterfinal where the matches go after that in a knock out system till the final.

Day one on Wednesday will feature eight matches across the four pools. Pool A will start with a fascinating clash between hosts Algeria and the near African neighbours Egypt, while Korea will meet Slovakia. Pool B sees defending champions Brazil play their neighbours Argentina and Mexico meets Bulgaria. In pool C playing in Oran, the European champions Poland play India and Italy meet Canada. Pool D shows an Afro-European clash between France and Tunisia and another strong match between the Asian champions Iran and one of the big favorites Russia.

Brazil head Coach, Oncken Percy expressed his hopes to win the title for the seventh time in history and the third time in row. "We came here for the trophy but our way will not be easy in presence of the big forces specially Russia, Poland Italy," said Percy. "We will do our best to make this year of a pure Brazilian Volleyball after our big success in the other competitions."

Iran coming with a full power team hopes to repeat the great performance in the last two editions but with more progress towards the trophy this time. "We are looking forwards to compete for the title but we have to concentrate against the big teams specially Brazil and Russia," said Iran head coach Ahmad Poorkashiyan after the friendly match against Algeria in Harcha hall four days ago. "I think we have to work hard to achieve our goals."
