Brazil and Russia to
contest final
Algiers,
Algeria, August 31, 2005 – Just like the older age category,
Brazil and Russia claimed the tickets for the final of the
ninth Boys U-19 World Championship after claiming victories
over Italy and Argentina respectively in a day full of
emotions, in the semifinals at Harcha hall in the Algerian
capital on Wednesday. Both big Volleyball countries were the
finalists in the Junior Men's U- 21 World Championship in
India last month, when Russia took the only Volleyball
trophy lost by the Samba Dancers this season.
Brazil will try to take the revenge when they meet their
arch rivals in the final on Thursday, while Russia aims to
claim the double. The losers of the semifinal Italy and
Argentina will also meet for the last place on the podium.
Brazil rebounded from one set down and from defence and
blocking problems to claim a crucial victory over the solid
Italian side 3-1 (12-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22) in a match
that had the crowd on their feet. Italy used their big guns
Matteo Martino and Rocco Barone to win the first set to show
Brazil they will not find it easy getting to the final.
Brazil coach Percy Oncken made a sharp decision to
substitute his team captain and one of the competition’s
best setters in Carlos Faccin when he was out of form and
managed to use Murilo Radke who led the team to come back
using the strong wing spikers Wanderson Campos and William
Da Costa, both playing a great role in the victory.
"Our strength comes from the coordination of all the staff
since 1991 which made me deal with all teams easily through
the full statistics," Oncken said. "I will put my strategy
in place now to meet Russia in the final, as I know it will
be a difficult match."
Russia sobered Argentina, the dark horse of the competition,
by delivering a 3-0 lesson in the other semifinal. The
Russians displayed all their skills to win the match 25-21,
25-20, 27-25 after a magnificent performance from middle
blockers Oleg Sychev and Nikolay Evtyukhin.
"Our performance in this competition is rising match to
match and we reached our peak today because we played as a
team with full Volleyball skills including the solid block,
the efficient spikes, good reception and strong spike
service," Russia head coach Vladimir Kondra said.
In the semifinal of the classification matches, France
rebounded from one set down to claim a 3-1 victory (15-25,
25-16, 25-18, 25-22) over Slovakia to play for the fifth and
sixth positions leaving Slovakia to play for the seventh and
eighth spots.
In the other match, Iran found it easy to claim a straight
sets victory (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) over a disappointed
Poland side.
Apart from the thrilling final between Brazil and Russia and
the third place match between Italy and Argentina, the
competition’s final day on Thursday will feature Iran vs.
France for the fifth and sixth positions and Poland vs.
Slovakia for positions 7 and 8. |
