Brazil, Italy, Argentina
and Russia into semis
Algiers,
Algeria, August 30, 2005 – Brazil, Italy, Argentina and
Russia succeeded in qualifying for the semifinals of the
ninth Boys U-19 World Championship after recording big
victories over Poland, Iran, France and Slovakia in another
day full of drama, in the quarterfinals here at Harcha hall
in the Algerian capital on Tuesday. The defending champions
Brazil will now meet Italy in an early “final” of the
competition, while Argentina plays Russia in the other
semifinal on Wednesday.
Brazil used all of their Volleyball skills in attack and
defence to move one more step closer to defending their
title when they swept Poland 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 29-27).
According to the rest of the matches in this competition,
the Samba dancers produce a new star every match and it was
Jose Junior Santos against Poland when he closed all the net
spaces in front of the Polish spikers and scored the
critical points in each set. Brazil played a constructive
game conducting the dance as usual to have the victory in
only 78 minutes.
"We put our tactics to stop the best players in Poland
especially Bartosz Janeczek, Michal Chaberek and the setter
Waldemar Kaczmarek, “Brazil head coach Oncken Percy said.
“We managed to use our good service to disturb our opponent
and we succeeded to do this in the first and second sets.”
In the match of the day, Argentina rebounded from two sets
down to claim a 3-2 victory (23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18,
20-18) over France to qualify for the semifinals for the
first time in their history. The match lasted 108 minutes
featuring plenty of skill and emotion. As usual Argentina
wing spiker, Rodrigo Quiroga was the key player not only
with his 19 points scored in the match, but also with his
emotional leadership. French star Nicolas Marechal led his
team decisively to match point three times in the
competition’s longest tiebreak but his team lost due to
service mistakes.
Expressing his happiness, Argentina head coach Fabian Moraco
said, "I'm very glad to be the first Argentina head coach to
lead his team to the semifinals. The match today was very
difficult against a very strong team but we managed our
situation after losing the first two sets using our two
solid middle blockers and improved our defence and thus we
won two successive sets and finally won the marathon
tiebreak."
In another five set match full of thrills, Italy secured
their semifinal ticket after they pulled off a 3-2 victory
(25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-12) over Iran using the
artistry of their middle blockers and the strong wing
spikers. Carmelo Gitto was the prominent star with 17
points.
Russia dominated the net to have the easiest victory in the
quarterfinals over Slovakia (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) and become
the last qualifier into the semifinals.
Apart from the two big matches Brazil vs. Italy and
Argentina vs. Russia, the competition on day six on Thursday
will feature also two matches in the semifinal
classification matches 5-8, Poland vs. Iran and Slovakia vs.
France. |
