Argentina-France most important clash, defending champs seek another title against Poland

Algiers, Algeria, August 29, 2005 – Argentina and France will feature in the most exciting face off in the quarterfinals of the ninth Boys U-19 World Championship to be held in Harcha Hall in the Algerian capital on Tuesday. Other clashes see defending champions Brazil take on Poland, Iran play Italy and Slovakia come up against Russia.

Argentina and France, who both had positive results and victories beyond what they expected earlier in the tournament, will try to continue their successful path in the competition especially considering that both have never qualified for the semifinals with Argentina’s best being fifth position in 1991 and the best for France was the seventh position achieved three times in 1991, 1997 and 2001. So it will be a historic victory for the winner being for the first time ever in the final four.

"We expect to meet a strong opponent but we will apply our strategy to continue the successful competition," said Argentina head coach Fabian Muraco.

The defending champions Brazil, who dropped only two sets against Bulgaria in the first round, will start their actual fight for a seventh title when they meet Poland.

"We are managing the competition match by match so that we can achieve our goal," Brazil head coach Oncken Percy said after the drawing of lots of the quarterfinal. "From now we can't predict who will be the winner in any match. We are not only seeking to win but also to entertain the spectators here when we present the future stars of the sport," he added.

Italy’s promising team has to meet a solid opponent at youth and junior level in Iran who had a place in the podium in the last two competitions finishing second in 2001 and third in 2003. The blue team will seek a second trophy after they won the title in 1997.

Russia, who came to the competition as second favorites behind Brazil, haven't shown their true potential but they want to do that on Tuesday against Slovakia who were the leaders of their preliminary pool.
