Argentina, Iran, Russia &
Poland secure quarterfinal vacancies
Algiers,
Algeria, August 28, 2005 - Russia, Poland, Argentina and
Iran secured their tickets in the quarterfinals of the ninth
Boys U-19 World Championship here in Algiers and Oran
following victories over Bulgaria, Egypt, India and Korea
respectively in the play off round on Sunday.
The four teams will join Brazil, France, Slovakia and Italy
in the last four who will continue the competition on
Tuesday as the defending champions Brazil meet Poland; while
Argentina play France in the strongest match up in the
quarterfinals. The other matches will feature Iran vs. Italy
and Slovakia vs. Russia.
In a thrilling match of the day, France completed one more
step towards the competition title after their difficult
victory over the strong Italian side in a five sets match
(25-22, 23-25, 25- 17, 15-25, 15-12) lasting 201 minutes
full of skills and ambition in the play off seeding game.
The defending champions Brazil, meanwhile, entertained the
spectators in Harcha Hall in the Algerian capital of Algiers
as they needed only 62 minutes to collect another straight
sets victory (25-14, 25-17, 25-8) over Slovakia in the Play
off seeding match.
Argentina captain Rodrigo Quiroga led his team to a 3-1
(25-18, 22-25, 25-23, 28-26) victory over the highly
motivated Indians. The unstoppable Argentina star penetrated
the Indian defense from position four as all the trials to
defend him from the Indian team failed.
Argentina coach Fabian Muraco said the victory was due to
his team’s high performance and the leadership assets
captain Rodrigo Quiroga. "It was a very hard match but we
managed our situation through the proper block and good work
by the net especially through our team captain Quiroga. I'm
happy to qualify to the quarterfinal for the first time in
my country's history." Muraco said.
Iran needed 77 minutes to pull off a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19,
25-23) win over the Korea in a match dominated by Iran
through their strong front line spikers to secure a
quarterfinal vacancy.
Russia secured a quarterfinal ticket easier than expected as
they pulled out a straight sets victory over a tired
Bulgaria side (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) in 62 minutes. The
Russians used their stars, Anton Fomenko (the match scorer
with 14 points) and Dimity Krasilov to settle the match.
Poland completed the quarterfinal line up when they defeated
Egypt 3-0 (25- 18, 27-25, 25-21) in Boutlelis Hall of Oran. |
