In a fantastic five-set thriller Slovakia used all their skills to beat Egypt 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12). The Egyptian team put on their best performance in the competition and went close to victory in the tiebreak when they lead 8-5. But finally Slovakia led by Jakub Musil and Miroslav Jacobov ended the marathon in their side’s favour. The highly physical Korean team made it three defeats for the organizers when they defeated Algeria 3-0 (25-19, 31-29, 25-19). The victory put Korea into second position of the pool ahead of Egypt in third.

Brazil, using some of their substitutes, beat outsiders Mexico in straight sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) in their final match of pool B. "It was an easy match for us but I'm not satisfied with my team’s performance,” Brazil coach Oncken Percy said. “In the second round we will change our style and strategy as we will meet stronger teams like Russia, France, Italy and Slovakia and after these India and Iran."

Mexico coach Carlos Nova said; "We played in the hardest pool with very strong teams so we had a psychological hurdle even before the competition started."

Argentina dominated the block to clinch a considerable victory over the strong Bulgaria team in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) in 64 minutes. Bulgaria suffered from the big effort they did in their previous match against Brazil, so they appeared in a completely different frame of mind. Argentina ended pool B in the second position ahead of Bulgaria in third.

The emerging Indian team caused the biggest upset of the competition in pool C when they rebounded from an early set back to post a surprise victory over Italy, one of the favorites 3-1 (14-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21). Guttikonda Pradeep scored 24 points - one third of India’s team points. In the same pool Poland beat Canada 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-18) however Italy finished first on points ratio followed by Poland and India in third.

France again proved that they came to Algeria as one of the big favorites as they had another surprise, defeating Russia 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22) in a match full of Volleyball skill and entertainment. For the third time the French superstar Nicolas Marechal was the top scorer with 17 points. In the same pool Iran defeated Tunisia in another five set match 18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-14, 15-13.
