Another day for samba dancers and second victory for favorites

Algiers, Algeria, August 25, 2005 - Again it was the day of the samba dancers from Brazil in the ninth Boys U-19 World Championship here in Algiers and Oran where they attracted the emotions of the fans on day two of the tournament collecting their second victory, beating Bulgaria in a fantastic five-set match. Along with Brazil, the big favorites Russia, France, Italy and Slovakia achieved their second victory in a row to secure a play off vacancy in front of FIVB Vice President, Dr. Amr Elwani.

No words can describe the thrills and excitement in the Pool B match between the defending champions Brazil and the brave Bulgarian team which finished 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 25-11, 17-25, 15-11) in 123 minutes. Both teams played a constructive game conducting the thrills and samba dance until the final seconds. The South Americans showed all their talent with masterly skill against the brave Europeans who used their solid serves to great effect. "I send my congratulations to the Bulgarian team for this high performance today especially the captain Kolev and Petkov," Brazil head coach Oncken Percy said. "I knew before the match that it will be a tough game because I watched the Bulgarian team in the European Championship qualifying to these finals and noticed that they use the strong spike serves. They showed much improvement and played better than before with their new coach."

"I have worked with the team for only two months and I think we played well in attack and defense against the best team in the world," Bulgaria coach Guergoui Draganov said.

In the same pool B Argentina used their big gun Franco Giachetta to clinch a 3-1 victory (25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19) over the tired Mexico team who played their first match in the tournament without any training session. "We were eager to have better results in the competition but it was difficult to play today without any training session before the match as we arrived just few hours before the match. Now we have to think of our last match against Brazil as we hope to appear in better performance" Mexico coach Carlos Ortega said.

The hosts Algeria lost their second match against Slovakia 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17) to give the Slovakian team their second victory in a row and secure a second round vacancy. Meanwhile, Korea used their fast strategy of play to disturb the Egyptian defense and win their match in straight sets (25-12, 25-22, 25-21).

In other results, India clinched a straight sets victory over Canada in pool C (25-21, 25-18, 25-20). In the same pool, Italy proved their consistency with a second valuable victory over Poland 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-16, 25-19) while Russia found it easy going clinching a straight sets victory over Tunisia (25-17, 25-16, 25-16) in pool D. France, meanwhile, continued their victory rhythm and defeated Iran 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19).
