Gdansk, Poland, July 7, 2011 – Last year’s FIVB World League gold and silver medallists Brazil and Russia both booked spots in the semifinals of the 2011 edition while Argentina guaranteed themselves their best ever finish after claiming their second win from as many matches in the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland on Thursday.
The second day of pool play, which concludes on Friday before the weekend’s semifinals and finals, saw Russia easily beat Cuba in straight sets (25-20, 25-20 and 25-20) in Pool F, repeating their pool play win of a year ago, which also confirmed a place in the semifinals.
“My players accomplished not only tactical goals, but strategic ones as well – they walked into the court thinking like winners,” Russia coach Vladimir Alenko said. “We have reasons to be content, there are moments in our play, when we do really well, there are great technical elements but of course there are also things that need some work.”

Final Round - Poland July 6-10
Meanwhile, world champions Brazil beat Olympic champions USA 3-1 (15-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-15) on the back of a game-high 21 points from captain Giba, improving Brazil’s win-loss record over USA in this year’s World League to 3-2 and 22-7 overall.
In the evening matches, Argentina continued their outstanding form by beating Bulgaria in straight sets (25-17, 25-22 and 25-22), with Facundo Conte the best scorer with 19 points, to book a top four spot, surpassing their previous best finish of fifth in 2009 and 2010. Poland’s 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-20) defeat at the hands of Italy, left the race for second spot in Pool E wide open - with one pool game still to play Italy, Poland and Bulgaria are all still in contention.
Day three sees USA play Cuba at 11:00 (local time), followed by the match to decide Pool F honours between Russia and Brazil (13:30) before Italy play Bulgaria (17:15) and Argentina take on the hosts Poland (20:00).
