U.S. captain David Lee: The Netherlands simply played better today

U.S. head coach Alan Knipe and captain David Lee during the press conference

Netherlands Head coach Peter Blangé: "I am very happy with the result. Our serving and blocking, normally not or strongest points, worked out fantastic. We had to make a last-minute switch because of a back injury to Lars Lorsheijd. Wytze Kooistra had to change from opposite to middle blocker. It was up to the team to manage this and they handled it very well. I am sure that the USA will be much better in the next match, but we are ready for them."

Netherlands Captain Jeroen Trommel: We played a very good match in a fantastic atmosphere. We translated the tension and nervousness we had for these games the right way. After five years away from the World League we showed our qualities again at the highest stage. I have to compliment all my teammates for this result."

American Head coach Alan Knipe: "The Netherlands played extremely well today and grabbed all their chances. From the beginning they put us under pressure with their serves. Our serves and passing were not good enough to stay close in the score. Tomorrow we will play at a higher level, because now we have more information about the Orange team and know what to expect."

American Captain David Lee: "Tomorrow we have a new chance to win. The Netherlands played very well, and we did not play at the level we can. We have a young and inexperienced team, but we have to accept that they played better. Especially their wing-attackers, who scored easily. But I am very disappointed with the result."
