Alan Knipe: 'The difference tonight was our serving'

From left, U.S. captain David Lee, U.S. coach Alan Knipe, Italian coach Andrea Anastasi and Italian captain Valerio Vermiglio participate in the press conference.

Italy Captain Valerio Vermiglio: Like last night, it was a really nice game. We gave too much of an easy game to the USA. They were at a higher level than yesterday, especially their serve and blocking defense.

U.S. Captain David Lee: Our serving was as good as it gets tonight and we put more pressure on their serve receive. I’m happy with the result and we are one step closer to making the final six in Serbia. Our players approached this match as a do-or-die situation.

Italy Coach Andrea Anastasi: Congratulations to the USA. It was a hard game. Obviously we lost, but we are going to still try to make it to Belgrade. After tonight, we need to work on our serving and passing.

U.S. Coach Alan Knipe: Congratulations to Italy for a great weekend of volleyball. This was a great weekend for U.S. volleyball fans. I am impressed with the improvement in Italy from just a couple weeks ago.

The difference tonight was our serving. It wasn’t just the aces, it was the opportunity to get their setter off the net and get them out of system.

I thought we played with pride, passion and determination.
