Havana, Cuba, June 19, 2009 - "Cuban players are in great shape, and if they stay this way, they will be a tough squad to
defeat," said Russia head coach Daniele Bagnoli in a press conference
following Cuba's triumph at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum, in Pool C of the 20th
edition of the World League.
Bagnoli: "It was a thrilling spectacle, a huge
experience, truly important because it helped me know my players. Cuba deserved
the victory, because their players are in a better shape and made the most of
our mistakes. My players were somehow lazy, but I know we can do better. Pride
will be a key factor tomorrow. I don't believe in crowd pressure. We made
technical mistakes and the heat affected us. Cuba has young spikers, they are
strong and played a key role in the game. If they keep playing like this, they
will be a tough squad to defeat this year."
Cuban head coach Orlando Samuels: "It was a
thrilling game, as we expected. I believe we are in great physical shape.
Russia defeated us last year, so I'm truly happy for this victory. We have to
analyze our game, in order to get better. But anyway, I like the attitude my
players showed tonight."
Russia Captain Alexey Kazakov: "We didn't expect
this defeat. Cuba played better, made the most of our errors and we missed some
crucial serves. We need to keep on working to improve physically and
technically."
Cuba Captain Roberlandy Simon: "It was a great
match. We had ups and downs, but we managed to win point by point. Our serves
faded, but hopefully tomorrow we will be better."
