France record first home win in 2011 World League

Gérald Hardy-Dessources scored 14 points for France as they saw off Korea on Wednesday
Pau, France, June 29, 2011 - France clinched their first victory at home in the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League on Wednesday as they saw off Korea 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-15) in Pau.

It is only France’s second win of the tournament following a sole away win in Italy and was crucial as they look to avoid a World League playoff match.

Korea began their match well much better as they took the lead. In spite of the blocks from Gérald Hardy-Dessources and Antonin Rouzier's skill, the distance continued to grow for Korea. French mistakes damaged the hosts as the visitors were faultless in attack to take the opening set with little difficulty.

Korea carried their momentum through to the second and had another good start. But France tightened its block and spikes from Maréchal and Rouzier sent the home side into a three-point lead. France maintained this lead until Kwak Seung-Suk dragged the Koreans back to within a point. France coach Philippe Blain then called a timeout which proved effective as his side rallied to win the set.

Samuele Tuia helped his side take the early lead  in the fourth but Korea fought back through defence to lead at 11-10. But France dug deep to come back and regain the lead before taking the set, making the score 2-1.

Both team remained close in the opening encounters of the fourth befor France dominated Korea through hard-hitting attacks. France again extended their lead as the home fans got behind the side before Gérald Hardy-Dessources ended the match to the ecstasy of their fans.

The two teams will meet in their final match of the 2011 edition of the tournament on Friday at 18:30 GMT.
