Italy secure place in Final Round with win over Korea

Italy celebrate their straight sets win over Korea on Sunday night
Padova, Italy, June 26, 2011 - Italy ensured their place in the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League Final Round on Sunday after beating Korea in straight sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-21) in the final match of weekend five in Padova in front of 4,000 fans.

A solid game with great determination for Mauro Berruto’s team saw the side remain on top of Pool D. However Korea suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.

Italy started better in the first set and took an early a lead through a great double block. Korea called a time out but Italy continued to build the pressure in attack and thanks to an ace they maintained their lead before closing the set.

The second set began in a similar fashion with Italy again taking the lead early on. Italy played better in attack and defence and Korea couldn’t fight back. The home team maintained its advantage until the end of the set closing it out 25-13 with a great spike from Mattia Rosso.

Korea tried to stay in the game in the beginning of the third set and Italy closed with a slight margin at the first TTO. The teams went point to point and Italy arrived at the second TTO in the lead. The visitors tried to fight back towards the end of the set but Italy regained control and their momentum carried them through to the win.

Italy will play against Cuba in Parma and Modena next week while Korea play France in Pau and Boulazac.
