Bulgaria edge closer to Final Round spot with win over Japan

Bulgaria block out Japan on the way to a crucial win on Saturday
Varna, Bulgaria, June 25, 2011 – Bulgaria’s block and smooth serve was enough to see off visitors Japan 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-23) at home in Varna on Saturday as the side moved one step closer to a Final Round spot in their first match on the fifth weekend of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League.

It took 78 minutes for Radostin Stoychev's side to see off their Asian rivals as Tsvetan Sokolov proved a worthy replacement for injured captain Vladimir Nikolov. The opposite spiker scored 23 points and smashed Japan's reception on the way to victory.

Defence was the only advantage for the guests but it kept them alive till the very end. In the last set it took some courage and the side very nearly took the match to a fourth, but their valiant effort was not enough.

Bulgaria is anxious to correct the mistakes against Germany and Japan this year. But it will take at least two more clear victories so they will be hoping for more when they meet Japan tomorrow at 15:00 GMT.
