Bulgaria move closer to Final Round spot with win over Germany

Bulgaria´s Todor Alexsiev attacks successfully against the German block of Jochen Schöps and Stefan Hübner
Bremen, Germany, June 19, 2011 – World No.7 Bulgaria made an important step towards the Final Round on Sunday as they saw off hosts Germany 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) to maintain second place in Pool B of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League 2011 in Bremen.

Jochen Schöps scored 16 points for Germany as Tsvetan Sokolov topped the tally with 26 for Bulgaria.

Germany began well in block and defence but Bulgaria countered directly with powerful serves from Viktor Yosifoy. German Stefan Hübner equalized through the block but the guests still served with a lot of pressure and took a comfortable lead before the home side drew level at 24-all. However Sokolov finished the set to send the visitors into the lead.

The second set began in an equal fashion as neither team took advantage. Bulgaria made the first break but by an attack by Schöps’ saw Germany even the scores. After the second technical time out Bulgaria blocked and defended well as they eventually took the set and underlined their lead.

Denys Kaliberda started for Sebastian Schwarz as Germany moved ahead by three points in the third. The Bulgarian team lost confidence as their receiving game fell to pieces. Germany refused to let their lead go before a Bulgarian error saw the hosts bring the scores closer at 2-1.

Two block points for the team of Radostin Stoytchev and problems for the hosts saw Bulgaria take an early, comfortable lead. The home side defended well to reinstall hope into their fans but it was all in vain as Sokolov attacked at match point to seal the win.

Both sides have home games on weekend five of the World League next week as Germany face Russia and Bulgaria battle Japan.
