Tampere, Finland, July 4, 2009 – Finland played amazing match of volleyball and won the great Brazilian team in the World League match on Saturday in the Tampere Ice Hockey Arena. This was the first loss of Brazil in this year's League. The thriller ended 3-2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 17-15).
Finland has now played against Brazil 12 times in the World League and this was the first victory. In this year's World League Finland has played 8 matches and has 4 wins and fights hard for the second place in the pool.
Finnish team had a great support in the match from 6285 spectators, which is a new record attendance in the Finnish national team matches.
Finnish opposite spiker Mikko Oivanen was really hot player in this match. He scored excellent 28 points. Antti Siltala made 17 points and Olli Kunnari 16.
From the Brazilian team Vissotto scored 18 points and Murillo 17.
Finland started the match with a strong fighting spirit. Friday's weak performance was totally forgotten. Finns served well and now also attacked with great force and skill. Finland was in 8-7 lead at the first technical time out. Then Brazil had a good phase in the set and they took 16-14 lead. Brazil could keep the lead till the end although Finns fought well. Brazil won the set 25-22.
Finland continued to play well at the second set taking a nice 10-6 lead with good serves and attacks. Brazil tied the set at 14-14, but Finland took again the lead 16-14 at the technical timeout. The end of the set was very exciting with both teams attacking well. Brazil tied the set at 19-19 and then took the control of the game. Finns made a couple of small errors which was enough for Brazil to take the set 25-23.
Again at the third set Finland started well taking 10-6 lead and Brazilian Head coach Bernardo Rezende had to take a timeout at this early stage of the set. It did not help much and the Finns continued their excellent performance taking 16-9 lead. Brazil came three points closer at 17-13, but Finland did not lose their control. Brazilian players made some mistakes and Finland played with great determination. Finns won the set 25-22.
In the beginning of the fourth set Brazilian block took some important points and the South Americans took 8-6 lead. Finland tied the set at 10-10 and was leading at 16-15. A couple of points more and the lead was already 18-15. Then Brazil came back and tied again the thrilling set at 19-19. The end of the set was a great battle for the last points and the Finns won it with amazing fight 25-22. Finnish defense was brilliant and serves were very difficult for the Brazilian reception.
The last set started with excellent attack play from both of the teams and they took points in turns. Finland was leading 8-7 at the half way. Ace serve of Matti Oivanen took Finland to 11-9 lead and the Finnish players were making their fight of the life. Finland was leading already 13-10 when Brazil took three points in a row to tie the set at 13-13. The match was still open at 15-15, but the Finland got one point from the spike of Mikko Oivanen. Then substitute Olli-Pekka Ojansivu hit a powerful jump serve and Brazilian reception lifted the ball straight to the Finnish side and setter Mikko Esko hit the ball to the Brazilian court.
