Brazil maintains perfect record with victory over USA

Brazil's block was one of the many factors that ensured victory over visitors USA on Saturday
Belo Horizonte, Brazil, June 11, 2011 – Brazil gained revenge for their loss in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games final on Saturday as they saw off USA 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21) at Mineirinho Gymnasium in Belo Horizonte to remain unbeaten in Pool A of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League.

Brazil and United States hadn´t played an official match since the final of the 2008 Games when the Americans won gold by beating today's hosts in four sets.

With the result Brazil improved the win-loss record to 5-0 and secured their hold in Pool A with 15 points. United States fall to a win-loss record of 3-2 but hold onto second spot with nine points.

Opposite spiker Leandro Visotto led the host’s scorers with 14 points while United States was topped by opposite Clayton Stanley and wing spiker William "Reid" Priddy, both with 13 points.

United Sates took a seven points lead in the first set with a good sequence of serves from wing spiker Mathew Anderson. Brazil tried to narrow the difference towards the end but the visitors held on to take an early lead.

Brazil came back stronger in the second taking a four points lead at 6-2. With a good block and defense the Olympic champions tied the game at 8-8. The rest of the set was a point by point affair until two great serves from setter Marlon Marugati putted Brazil back in the lead. The hosts closed at 25-21 and tied the match to the delight of the fanatical spectators.

The hosts took the control of the match in the third set with good defense from libero Serginho and impressive counter-attacks and blocks. The United States had difficulty  receiving the Brazilian serve and the nine time champions closed the third set 25-19 to further their lead.

Brazil took the lead from the beginning of the fourth set and didn't relinquish it throughout, closing the set at 25-21 and the match in 3-1.

The two sides will meet again on Sunday at 14:50 GMT in Belo Horizonte.
