Finland beats Venezuela for third time

Finnish players celebrate.

Tampere, Finland, June 27, 2009 – Four matches against Venezuela and three victories for Finland in the volleyball World League 2009. The Finns won the fourth match in Tampere Ice Hall on Saturday 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19).

For Finland the match was clearly better than on Friday, when they won only 3-2. Finnish players had now great attitude and fighting spirit. Serves were difficult, attacks powerful and defense great. Also Venezuela fought bravely, particularly Luis Diaz. Without him Venezuela would have been in big trouble.

Diaz made 18 points and Thomas Ereu 12 points. Others were left under 5 points.

The best scorer in the Finnish team was opposite spiker Mikko Oivanen with 21 points.

Finland has now played six matches and won three of them. Venezuela has only one win and it is the last team in the pool.

In the first set of Saturday's match Finland took a couple of points lead in the beginning of the set leading 8-6 at the first technical timeout. Finns were leading with the same two points (16-14) also at the second technical time out. Both teams were attacking well, but Venezuelans had more troubles with their serves and reception. Finnish setter Mikko Esko was really in flames and send excellent passes to his spikers. Esko made also some points himself with surprising attacks. Finns finally took the set 25-21. Luis Diaz was the lonely star of the Venezuelans with his eight points.

Also in the second set the beginning was quite even and only one or two points were separating the teams all the way to the almost last points. Finns had 21-19 lead when they took two points more to 23-19. Then Venezuelans came back strongly and took four points in a row to tie the set to 23-23. However Finland took the last two points with an attack by center Jukka Lehtonen and a block by opposite spiker Mikko Oivanen.

Third set was in the beginning just like the two previous ones and Finland took a small 8-6 lead. Venezuela came back and had a 16-14 lead at the second technical timeout. The set was still tied at 18-18, but then Finland played very strongly the rest of the set and finally won it with strong jump serves of Mikko Oivanen and good blocking after that. The last set to Finland 25-19.
