Venezuela downs Finland in three sets

Venezuela's Ivan Marquez and Luis Diaz put up a successful block

Caracas, Venezuela, June 12th 2009 - Venezuela felt no nerves in the beginning of the 20th edition World League in beating Finland in straight sets 27-25, 25-21, 25-22 at the Poliedro de Caracas.

It was the first opening-game victory for Venezuela, who is competing in their sixth World League tournament.

The first set was very even. Venezuela began with several methods of attack, but Finland was able to adjust its block to stop the offense of its rivals. Venezuela's service games were the difference in the end, and a powerful service game from Luis Diaz was the difference for the home team.

The Finns started the second set strongly. Their defense stopped the attack of the Venezuelans, who made many mistakes. Finland took control in the two technical time-outs, but then Venezuela woke up. Again, they relied on the attack and combined power of Ivan Marquez and Luis Diaz.

In the third set, Finland once again took control of the scoreboard in the beginning, but they gradually lost strength. With a faltering attack, there was little Finland could do to keep their advantage. Venezuela was superior with its collective game and won via the production of Luis Diaz, who added 16 points, and Ivan Marquez, 14.
