Russia maintain unbeaten run with win over Germany

Kaliningrad, Russia, June 4, 2011 – Russia scored a solid result over Germany in Kaliningrad claiming a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-22) win in their in 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League clash on Saturday.

Russia improved their record to 4-0 and secured their hold on Pool B. Germany now fall to a win-loss record of 1-3.

Maxim Mikhaylov topped the Russian scorers with 16 points as Jochen Schops led Germany with seven points.

The Russian team was far from their best at the beginning of the first set before newcomer, Alexey Spiridonov, helped the home side to bring the score to tie and overcome the visitors.

Powerful attack and solid block helped the Russians to dominate in the early stages of the second set. Germany tried to fight back, but could not catch up in spite of several substitutions as they dived further towards defeat.

Russia maintained control in the third putting on an excellent performance. The Germans didn’t give up, staying close, but never came back as the set finished 25-22 to the hosts.

Germany now travel back home to face Japan while Russia welcome Bulgaria in Surgut.
