Serbia keen to assert themselves in Pool C

The last time Serbia and Argentina met in Novi Sad was in the 2009 FIVB World League Intercontinental Round

Belgrade, Serbia, 28 June, 2011 - Serbia, bronze medallists at the 2010 FIVB World League, have one more chance to qualify automatically for the 2011 Final Round in Poland next month as Pool C winners.

Argentina, their visitors in the final two matches this weekend in Novi Sad and Belgrade, are currently top of the group, four points ahead of Serbia. But the “Blue Boys” will be out to usurp the South Americans in qualifying for the 11th time for the final stage of the premier FIVB men’s club competition.
Serbia and Argentina have played 15 matches in the World League, but only one during the Final Round, and that was last year in Cordoba when Serbia beat their hosts on that occasion 3-0. Out of 15 matches played, Serbia have won 10 and lost five, with the set difference 37-23 in their favour. The last two matches were played in Rosario, Argentina, on the first weekend of this year’s competition when both teams managed a 3-0 win.

Media Centre of the “SPC Vojvodina” Hall of Sports in Novi Sad hosted today the press conference organized by the Volleyball Federation of Serbia before the matches of the last weekend in the Pool C of the 2011 World League between Serbia and Argentina. The media representatives were addressed by the head coaches of both teams, Mr. Igor Kolakovic and Mr. Javier Weber, as well as by the team captains, Rodrigo Quiroga of Argentina and Bojan Janic of Serbia.

- I am pretty tired of promising that we would play the best we can before each match in this World League. As you already know, most of the time we failed to do so. The only important thing is our performance on the court. The good thing is that we tent to perform well when we are on the verge of disaster. I am pleased that, for the first time after the initial match with Argentina, we played the last set against the Portuguese as we used to do over the years. We were passionate, we fought for each ball, and we were aggressive. I know that we will have strong support from our fans in Novi Sad and Belgrade because we need it so much in these deciding matches – said Igor Kolakovic, Head Coach of Serbia.

- I expect very difficult matches because Serbia is a great team with some of the best players in the world. We are in a good moment right now and I hope that we will maintain the high level of our performance. – said Mr. Javier Weber, Head Coach of Argentina.

- Before the start of the World League we thought that it wouldn’t be so difficult. But ok. We are still playing at home the deciding matches with the exciting rival and everything is in our hands. We played many matches with Argentina over the years so there won’t be any surprises. I hope that our fans will come in great number to support us. – concluded Bojan Janic, team captain of Serbia.

-Serbia is surely one of the best four teams in the world. I think we need at least one victory to be safe, but then again they want to win both matches so it is going to be pretty exciting. We are in a good shape, but slightly tired from the trip and the previous matches. – said Rodrigo Quiroga, team captain of Argentina.

The matches of the sixth weekend in the Pool C between Serbia and Argentina are scheduled for Wednesday, June 29, in the City of Novi Sad, and Thursday, June 30, in Belgrade. Both matches start at 20:00h CET.
